Expressionism is an art movement dating from 1920’s especially in drama and
painting. It is different from impressionism in the sense that its aim is to
express an intellectual idea whereas impressionism is concerned only with pure
vision and not with intellectually apprehended facts. Later on it got changed
and was known for other implications in the development of different arts. This
art of the twenties “manifested itself in painting and music, as well as in
literature where its persistent influence has been in the theatre.” In drama it is characterized by unusualness and freedom of subject-matter and
treatment in order to express an intellectual idea. Its form is usually
symbolist. Ultimately this term expressionism was adopted by those writers who
turned their path from traditional realism.

“Sparrows” by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas is about Rahim Khan a fifty year old man who isolates
himself from the society due to the disappointments he gone through in his
young life. He vents out his frustration in the form of rage at the
society and his own family. Everyone was scared of his anger and ignored him.
So, he was socially isolated. Though Rahim Khan is depicted as a ruthless man
in the beginning, everyone is deeply moved by his love towards the sparrows at
the end. He craves for love and solace and the sparrows in his hut were the
only beings he expressed his love and tenderness. According to James S. House
social isolation has an adverse effect on the health. Rahim Khan’s isolation
leads to deprival of love and consolation from the society and also his own
family which at the end leads to his death.

As foreseen by
Mahatma Gandhi in his seminal work, ‘Hind Swaraj’, the western
developmental paradigm, based on centralized technologies and urbanization, has
given rise to serious problems like increasing inequity leading to crime and
violence, and climate change due to rapid ecological degradation. To ameliorate
these problems, it is necessary to promote development of rural areas in tune
with Gandhian vision of self-sufficient ‘village republics’, based on local
resources and using decentralized, eco-friendly technologies so that the basic
needs of food, clothing, shelter, sanitation, health care, energy, livelihood,
transportation, and education are locally met. This should be the vision of
holistic development of villages. Presently, 70% of the population in India
lives in rural areas engaged in agrarian economy with agriculture and allied
sector employing 51% of the total work-force but accounting for only 17% of the
country’s GDP. Present Research Paper is a outcome of the empirical study of
the village Vanjarwadi where the researcher conducted a baseline survey of 106
households.

Deshpande
has wonderfully presented the society, its social elements and the state of
females by which we can understand what runs in the minds of these females. The
youth of the society needs to be more careful as the future generation will
make it difficult for them to compete. Her approach has been modern but it
doesn’t mean that she does not seem to value the tradition and the orthodox
approaches at all. These three novels are the best written by the novelist. Her
concept of modernity is the freedom of expression in the Independence with
which one can live happily. Let us try to look at this by analyzing the aspects
that are really amazing. We can get the idea only after discussing this.

The present article deals with some of the poems
of Keki Daruwala, a renowned poet and here we have tried to discuss some of the
themes of his poems. His collection of poetry named The Keeper of the Dead in
1984 won him the most prestigious Sahitya Academy Award. Daruwala considers
poem as a child because “you like it in its totality and not because a line here
or a limb there.” ‘Ghaghra in Spate’ displays the problems of the villagers who
are starving for several days because of the floods in Ghaghra. In his Tarai he
gives a vivid and authentic picture of the bandits wreaking a walk in the
region setting the small house is on fire, harass and loot the people of the
gold ornaments like rings, necklace etc. In the poem The Mistress, the title is
indeed used for English language. He says that “my mistress is half-cast.”
Another of his poem, The Unrest of Desire shows the incapacity of men to
suppress a desire for to keep it hidden under some false or fake expression and
his eye. Thus, there are so many other poems and themes. So let’s discuss them.
