THE USE OF ENGLISH IN TAMIL NADU

K. BALASUBRAMANIAN

ABSTRACT

As English is considered a Global or Universal language, it is not used by people in the same manner all over the world. The reason is there are different countries which have different languages. English is used as the first, the second and the third language. For the people of England, America and some other countries, English is the mother tongue. They are called the native speakers of English. For some countries like China, Russia, Japan, etc., English is the third language. For their internal communication or correspondence, they use the mother tongue for their communication. But they also learn English for communicating with foreign countries. So for those countries English is used as a foreign or the third language. English is used as the second language in India. In India, as it is a multilingual country, there are many languages used by the people. So in that situation, the people of the country need one common language for their internal communication and as well as their international correspondence. Though Hindi is used by many people in our country and it is also considered as the official language, it is not possible for all the people of our country to learn and use Hindi for various reasons. So in that situation, English is also used as an official language of our country. Let us discuss the use of the language English in the state of Tamil Nadu.

EXPRESSING MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL CHALLENGES OF INDIAN WOMEN THROUGH FICTION: A PROBLEM OF GRAVE CONCERN AND NEED OF THE HOUR

SHIPRA BHARDWAJ & DR PAWAN KUMAR

ABSTRACT

Fiction has ever since been an authentic mode of literary art to expose not only the vices and follies of society but also a powerful mean to study and evaluate the human mind and its intricacies. Challenges, undoubtedly, are the part and parcel of human life, but the nature and intricacies do vary extensively depending upon an individual’s social, political and economic conditions. Marginalization in society is undoubtedly one of the issues that need to be deliberated seriously. As goes without saying, to be a member of a group of society that has been marginalized for a long time, would obviously be highly disadvantageous; and when one belongs to two or three of such groups simultaneously – as in the case of a poor Dalit woman in India or a poor African-American woman in the US, things are bound to become more complicated. The fate of the marginalized lot in a society thus needs to be examined holistically for a just and healthy literary criticism. The present research article aims to critically examine and explore the typical strata of Indian women and the effect of physical, mental, and emotional challenges faced by them; and the very arena of examination revolves around the women characters in The Thousand Faces of Night, the first best Eurasian novel of the well known writer, activist and columnist, Githa Hraiharan.

Key Words: Challenges, emotional, manifestations, physical, mental.

UMRAO JAAN – THE TWO ROLES

DR. D. PARAMESHWARI

ABSTRACT

What sets apart the two films and the writings of Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa is the role of the protagonist depicted by Rekha and Aishwariya Rai both Hindus and both getting to the soul for the Muslim ethos with elan. No doubt Indian cinema has been a strong integrating element finding the Ganga-Jamuna duality of the subcontinent and it has deep roots in the culture of north India, in particular the new public culture that emerged in the nineteenth century, itself in part a product of many changes in Indian culture that began as part of the colonial encounter and other social shifts of the time.
