A STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CONSTRUCTIVIST LEARNING APPROACH AT SECONDARY LEVEL

JAYAN T.

ABSTRACT

It is clear that the prevailing strategies at the secondary level are said to be sufficient to meet the needs of the learners. But some alterations are also desirable. Because the learners are on the threshold of lateral thinking and it is certain that they will be able to cultivate their own style in all their performances with a further modifications in the development of their verbal intelligence. These problems highlight the importance of an urgent need for a change in our present educational strategies. The Multiple Intelligence is based on the notion of phrenology, studies on the strengths, weaknesses and the idiosyncrasies of his or her mental profile. Apart from the traditional concepts of perception, there exist different kinds of mental powers such as language music or vision. According to this new approach, the students will have an all round development and it helps to enhance their emotional as well as intellectual level. Again it enables them to live in tune with the social changes. So this new approach is named Constructivism. In the recent method, learning is happening not by imitation, but by recurrence. So, the teacher has to take up a co-learner’s role in the language teaching and also in other subjects. Here the skill oriented approach is replaced by knowledge level oriented approach.

DR. R. SANDHYA

Tagore’s greatest play Mukta-dhara, which deals with the terrible inroads which the machine can make into the human personality, and with the ruthless technological power of science which tends to crush the human spirit.  Of course, science is the greatest benefactor mankind has known so far; but science has its dark side too: think only of the two atomic bombs which were thrown over two cities of Japan during World War II, and the destruction which they wrought.  The play Mukta-dhara depicts the conflict between the evil side of science and the humanitarian impulses of mankind.

EPIC AFFIRMATION IN THE LAST PLAYS OF SHAKESPEARE

SUNIL N. WATHORE

ABSTRACT

William John Shakespeare, the world’s greatest dramatist and best interpreter of the human nature, was born in the pleasant town of Stratford-on-Avon.  The soft flowing Avon and the picturesque variety of the neighborhood must have made a deep impression on him.  Surely, he has noted everything he saw, the hills, the dales, the meadows, the woods and their flora and fauna.  He is regarded as the greatest dramatist of the world, one who towered head and shoulders above his contemporaries.  Glowing tributes are paid to his genius and he is called, ‘the world’s immortal poet’.  But he did not achieve this greatness and glory at once.  He began his career by working as an actor, then he revised and modified existing plays and the plays so modified, proved to be more appealing than the original plays.  It was in this way that he painstakingly acquired the requisite knowledge of stagecraft.  It was in this way that he mastered his art.

NEW HISTORICIST READING OF IDRIS: KEEPER OF THE LIGHT

SUSHITHA ANOOP

ABSTRACT

A historical novel contains truth and imagination. On examining the relation between art and history, one can understand that history requires truth to the events of the past, but art requires imagination and concentration on needs of art. The writer of a historical novel must use the facts of history according to the needs of her novel. She maintains truth to history. At the same time, she deviates from the facts of history in order to introduce new characters for making literary effectiveness. In Idris, Anita Nair takes the opportunity to select past events of seventeenth century and combine them with the plot of the novel through her powerful imagination. She does not hesitate to reveal her novel as a historical narrative. In New Historicist reading of Idris, it is clear that Anita Nair is influenced by her own social sphere and surroundings. She is inspired by eastern culture, Nair Tharavad, Malabar and women’s position in the society. Her main character Idris belongs to multicultural setting.

BLACK FEMINISM IN ALICE WALKER’S THE COLOR PURPLE AND TONY MORRISON’S THE BLUEST EYE

DESHMANE ONKARESHWAR R.

ABSTRACT

African American Literature is rooted in America by writers of African descent. The primary origins of this genre can be traced in eighteenth century writers as Philips Whitely and Olaudah Equiano, who reached high points with slave narratives and the Harlem Renaissance. Today African American Literature is continued with authors such as Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, and Walter Mosley who are ranked as the top writers in the United States. This genre is accepted as an integral part of American literature. This special kind of literature has generally focused on themes of particular interest to Black people in the United States.  Black Feminism is the acknowledgement that women of color have been oppressed by sexism and racism, that there was a failure to recognize and address these issues in the Feminist Movement and the Black Liberation Movement, and that women of color have their own agenda that neither movement can take on. “Black Feminism focuses on the experiences, needs, and desires of women of color”

Key Words- Black Feminism, Alice Walker, Tony Morrison, Black Liberation.

DELINEATION OF FEMALE CHARACTER AARTI IN CHETAN BHAGAT'S NOVEL 'REVOLUTION 2020'

DR. B. T. LAHANE

ABSTRACT

Chetan Bhagat has created the character of Aarti in his novel 'Revolution 2020'. When we study his female characters, we remember the heroines of Shakespeare alone and independently fighting against the traditions, protocols and biases of society. Even his characters remind us the characters of real flesh and blood by Charles Dickinson, a great Victorian novelists. Bhagat created his characters to live and visualize the aspirations and the views towards the life of modern girls and boys. He has presented Aarti as globalised modern Indian girl. She breaks all the traditional attitudes of society towards women. Not only Aarti but his all heroines change the attitude of society towards women.

INDIAN HISTORY MADE EASY: SIRCAR’S REVIEW OF INDIAN FREEDOM STRUGGLE

SHAILAJA B. WADIKAR

ABSTRACT

The post-independence period witnessed the rise of the cultural movements like the Progressive Writers’ Association (PWA) in 1936 and the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) in 1943. “The IPTA’s purpose was clear-cut from the beginning: to portray through the medium of the stage and other traditional arts details of external aggression by the fascist, internal repression by a colonial government, and the disintegration of the economic life with an intention to enlighten Indians about their possible role in solving these problems.”

People joined hands against the emerging trends of capitalism, imperialism and fascism and provided a strong support to the Communist Party of India, worker’s associations and peasant movements. The ‘Gana Natya Andolon’ (People’s Theatre Movement) and the ‘Naba Natya’ (New Theatre) indicated a total break from the traditional Bengali theatre. It had initiated the beginning of the New Drama Movement in Bengal during the 40s and the 50s.

SEEMA BANSAL SOMANI & DR. ROHIT PHUTELA

ABSTRACT

Women’s Studies have become important in modern context by obtaining the status of independent gender studies in every nook and corner of the world. Any research conducted in this branch has a far reaching impact on the community of womanhood irrespective of their geographical, religious and cultural locations. Today the most interesting questions are connected with the investigations of social factors that influence a person’s behavior according to her/his gender. Language, literature and art help to open new aspects of gender development and get the deeper understanding of existing social and cultural practices. As the modern age is generating the new and bold compositions in women’s literature encapsulating the myriad manifestations of present day generation, the emergence of the new discourses on woman is also a common phenomenon. These new discourses break the myth of the accepted modes of gender featuring by probing the gender constructions. Catering to the need of the upcoming times, this paper offers a different critical perspective for Indian women’s literature. This fresh critical insight will create many debatable issues as the upcoming models of women’s behaviour in fiction can’t be judged by the obsolete critical norms.

DR. SHUBHA MEGHWANSHI

ABSTRACT

In 2007, the Indian Government announced a nine fold increase in higher education spending over the next five years. While this came as good news to a sector characterized by limited supply and uneven quality, three years later it is apparent that a more concerted effort is required. Quality has become the defining element of education in the 21st Century in the context of new social realities. How to provide quality education to large numbers at affordable costs is the primary concern of developing countries. Quality, as all of us are aware, makes education as much socially relevant as it is personally indispensable to the individual. In this sense quality becomes the defining element of education. This paper identifies the key challenges the Indian higher education is facing and evaluates the proposed solutions.
